| or The Great Saw Bandit Chase |

Monday morning, March 20, Linda and I were out at the palapa. She started back to the house and I heard her talking with someone, so went to see what was up and found her on the front porch talking to man with a Skilsaw and hatchet who said he was working at a job site up the road (north) and wanted to test if the saw was working before he got there (strange request). Linda asked if he was working at Robert's (where the caretaker's quarters were under construction) and he said yes. We let him plug in the saw, which worked, and he headed on up the road. But Linda went out and watched him walk right on past Robert's without stopping. About this time, Gabriel came by, rather excited, and said he'd been working on Tony & Lynn's lot when he saw this guy at the house next door, lot #10, and thought he may have broken in. Gabriel then headed off toward Robert's and Linda went in to call the police. Then she and I headed up the road in the pickup with our camera in search of the suspect. We caught up with him at the Coco Plum site. Gabriel had chased after him on his bike, machete in hand, and, before we arrived on the scene, apparently foiled an attempt by the suspect to hitch a ride in a passing truck. Our first pass at getting his picture failed and he fled into the bush, but we spotted him coming back out further up the road, still carrying the saw and hatchet, and we were able to get a couple of pictures then headed back for the house. Meanwhile, no sign of the police, so we drove to Seine Bight but no one was at their office. We went back to the house, printed out the pictures, then Linda set off for Placencia to deliver them to the police and check on progress on the Harbour Place house. As Linda was leaving, Sally, the lot #10 housesitter, had just returned on her bike from Seine Bight. We showed her the pictures, she confirmed that the saw had been taken from her house and, cussing up a blue streak, said she was going after him on her bike. We talked her out of that and gave her one of the pictures. Apparently, with use of the photo, Sally tracked down the thief in or near Seine Bight a couple of hours later. By that time he'd sold the saw to a local (earlier, after leaving our house, he'd unsuccessfully tried to sell it to worker's at Ken's house, next to the Rev's). Sally took the saw back from the buyer and, with the assistance of several friends, took custody of the thief and hauled him to Placencia and turned him over to the police. Reportedly the thief was from Belize City and, faced with the damning photo evidence, admitted to the theft, plead guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in jail. Apparently the hatchet was considered a weapon, resulting in a longer sentence. |
